One of the oldest wines in the world 'Retsina'
continues to surprise many pundits who have been ignoring it or
predicting its demise for years. In fact UK sales have increased
steadily in recent years and it is now by far the best selling Greek
wine at over 30,000 cases per annum. With its distinctive yellow
label, Kourtaki Retsina is instantly recognised and stocked by nearly
all UK supermarkets and wine specialist retailers.
Every bottle of Kourtaki Retsina of Attica is individually numbered
and the wine is produced from hand-picked Savatiano grapes grown
in Attica a recognised D.O. region. Resin from the Aleppo pine is
added during fermentation at a proportion of 1% to give the wine
its unique flavour balanced with a modern taste of freshness and
ripe fruit.
The long-term success of the Kourtaki Retsina
in export markets probably stems from the fact that the company
was the first to introduce modern wine making methods into Greece
with stainless steel tanks and temperature control fermentation.
The company also realised the importance of selecting Savatiano
grapes from vineyards at higher altitudes on the slopes of Mt. Parnes
in the northern part of Attica rather than from the hot dry plain
where many locally drunk Retsinas are produced. Another technique
introduced by the Kourtakis family was the use of gentle non-continuous
pressing of the grapes. Even today only juice from the first pressings
is used in the making of Kourtaki Retsina.
